The Department of Developmental Services is a state-wide system that provides support and services to persons with mental retardation who reside in family homes, independently, in state-run facilities, in approved community training homes, and in over 830 approved/certified community housing units. Since 1987, most services and supports provided by the Department of Social Development are subject to federal reimbursement under a home and community-based waiver (Medicaid) approved by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Community-based housing program: The program was established to assist persons with developmental disabilities with housing costs associated with community residential rents. Any person who does not have sufficient income from (earned and unearned) sources and assets to pay all their housing costs may be eligible for community-based housing benefit. New housing grant applicants will be added based on the availability of funding for the current year. The community housing grant programme can be considered after all other funding options that help people with developmental disabilities to pay the monthly housing costs have been pursued. All applicants will be required to participate in the selection of an eligible residency for this program. A community-based housing subsidy can be used to support a person to live in any residence/household that adheres to the requirements of this program.
