The Department of Health and Human Services of Anchorage is a leader and partner in promoting health and well-being in the anchorage community. DHHS is often referred to as the “best kept secret in town” because much of the work is done behind the scenes, to keep you, your families, pets and community safe and healthy. DHHS safeguards Anchorage public health by preventing, detecting, and treating communicable diseases, by assuring a safety net for seniors and vulnerable citizens in need of referrals or a safe place to sleep, by providing intervention and relocation services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, by monitoring and enforcing the highest standards for air quality, food sanitation, noise control, child care, and animal control regulations. We prepare and plan for potential community emergencies, connect citizens in need with temporary or permanent supportive housing, and provide a sacred place for burial and bereavement at the Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery. DHHS is also proud to help strengthen the community’s ability to improve its own health and well-being by informing, educating, and empowering people about health issues, mobilizing community partners to identify and solve public health problems, and by developing plans and policies that support individual community health efforts. 2017 will mark the 80th year that DHHS has worked to help keep the Anchorage community safe, and the citizens healthy. Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery : Welcome to the Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery. This is where some of Alaska's most notable sons and daughters are buried and where we honor our glorious history. The cemetery was established by President Woodrow Wilson in 1915 and the 22 acres includes private Tracts and public Tracts. The Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery serves as a tribute to the many people who have made Alaska famous throughout the world. Please join us at the Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery and revisit a part of the heritage of Anchorage and Alaska. The Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery Columbarium Wall was dedicated on Memorial Day 2003. This impressive structure, constructed of concrete and covered completely in granite, contains 3861 niches that will hold over 9000 urns of cremated remains. This burial option affords the community an alternative to traditional burial. Niches are designed in three sizes comprised of the Single Niche, Companion Niche and the Family Niche. This new addition to our community provides an attractive location where we can place our loved ones’ remains and return time and again to honor their lives. Anchorage Safety Patrol & Center: The Anchorage Department of Health and Human Services manages the contract for the Anchorage Safety Patrol (ASP) & Safety Center (ASC). ASP vans and staff are dispatched by the Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) Call Center to persons that appear to be incapacitated by alcohol or drugs in a public place. When not on a dispatch call from AFD, the ASP Van actively patrols the Anchorage Downtown and Midtown areas in search of persons that may be in need of assistance. If the ASP takes a person into protective custody, they will transport them to the Anchorage Safety Center (ASC) located next to Anchorage Jail Complex at 1500 East 3rd Avenue. Clients are assessed using basic physiological parameters; those falling outside of safe standards for the Safety Center are taken to the hospital for medical clearance or further care. The ASP response service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week with two vans patrolling from 2:00 PM – 6:00 AM and one van 6 AM to 2PM. A driver and state-certified Emergency Medical Technician staff each ASP Van. To request ASP services, call 343-4006. ASP vans are predominantly dispatched to the Downtown, Midtown, Mountain View and Fairview areas, however their response area extends to Anchorage areas north of International Airport Road. In the event the van is unavailable, dispatch requests may be referred to the Anchorage Police Department’s non-emergency line at 786-8900. For emergencies, call 911.
